View Full Version : Important feedback - attention all LMZF!

LMZF has reached a point in time...
We need to take stock of where we are as a community and as a forum in order to continue our successes.
Therefore, we ask all members to participate in this thread which will be active from time of posting for ONE week.
After this admin will act on the main points put forward.
Please take time to read this post carefully before posting
There are some guidelines to posting here and are as follows:
Posts will be moderated to the extent that un-necessary, trolling, spam posts will be removed.
Feedback needs to be constructive, look for the solution, not the problem.
Negative posts gain nothing but attract additional negative posts.
We aren't looking for praise on what's good and great nor criticism on what's crap, just those things that work well, those that need fixed or removed.
As a guideline of what we are looking for in the FIRST OF TWO THREADS(the next will run in a similar format the week this one finishes), this should help with what we are looking for:
Forum ease of use; design of board, use on various devices: PS3, PC MAC, mobile devices
Current content on boards, ie news, reviews, discussion areas
We have amassed a huge amount of data of the past months which I am currently analysing.
The invaluable feedback you supply will work in conjunction with the Google Analytics we have for the past 9 months.
With respect, please adhere to the above guidelines.
The aim of this, first of two threads, is to gauge the current state of the board.
Thanks all on behalf of all members
Mark

Can't say much apart from you guys are doing a great job and it is much appreciated.:thanks
If I had to be picky about anything then I would say that would it be possible to move the 'Mark forums read' option to a lower space from the 'Quick links' drop down box as I press it by accident alot when looking at Today's Posts? (yes, I am a clumsy oaf). I don't use the new post button as a rule.
Also the Home button overlaps onto the Quick links button a little (just a little).
You wanted something/s, there you go! :$
Well happy with everything you peeps do for LMZF, keep up the excellent work. :thanks

Sometimes searching for threads is a little hit and miss. Normally I use the 'New posts' link and that works fine for me.
One slight gripe is that I didn't get a reminder to donate again. I think I donated for 6 months and wouldn't have minded getting a reminder. I guess that's tricky to set up?

One thing though is I'm glad the banner at the top has gone, good as it was it took up too much room. Chat room is good addition.

I find searching hit and miss too, to the point i don't really use it like House i use the new post or go hunting manually, I know that the search function is kinda out of our hands though and its not really something that bothers me.
Think its all running really smoothly though.

Ok i think the site is fine, works well on my mobile devise fine, the only thing i would add for new members coming to the forum and joining a squad they seem to find it hard to find the squad rooms, might be worth creating a section pointing to the squad room easier!
Other than that everything is fine, and it's good to see you back making changes Mark! feels like we have a leader again, not that the other guy's haven't done a good job in your absence... So a big well done to all from me ;)

Everything is great. A couple of minor points to pick up on would be the whole squad thing is a bit pointless unless you like COD which I don't. Perhaps there should be squads for other games too and leagues/tournaments. Everything is a bit COD oriented. Squads seem to add to the social side of the site but for me there is no point being in one so feel a bit out in the cold.
Another would be the site isn't 100% on the PS3 browser. The main menus are messed up with options like New Posts missing.

No complaints - place just gets better and better.
If I could change anything it would be to have a "new posts" button at the bottom of the page as well as the top just to save having to scroll back to the top when you've finished reading a thread but its no biggy.
martymcfly3004
24th September 2009, 09:58 AM
I love this site as well, not really anything wrong with it. Though I would second what RadicalFish says about making the Squad system a bit less COD orientated for the few of us who don't really like the game. Though I fully appreciate you guys started this forum as I was for meeting up for COD 4.

Members definitely get more out of being part of a squad, but maybe they need a bit more of an identity. Maybe a banner / logo for each squad on the main page, with a tag line and a list of the main games that squad is playing, so new members know who they might want to approach.
Is there a way of formalising the match set ups too? Rather than relying on PM's, which some squads are better at than others, maybe there's a challenge board, where two squads can agree and post game types, date, time, etc?
What makes this place are the members, but if a few tweaks here or there make it easier for us to enjoy the forum and get a few games in then it's all good.

I asked for something like this months ago and got told no,using the pm system to sort a squad game is a pain in the bottom,I would prefer to deal with the whole squad and not just the leader who is proberly sick of sorting squad games out

No complaints either - works fine on work PC, home Mac, and iphone.
Like others, I was a bit daunted when I first started here - but that was because I was unfamiliar with forums in general. Once I got my head around it I was fine.
Re: comments about squads - I've found being a part of the Bravo squad amazing, and I've really got to know a good few people really well. It's definitely a historic thing though as there was a big reason to join a squad when I started.
I think there's still a place for them though - especially with the imminent release of MW2 (please don't let us down!) - so think it's a good idea to have a section about each of the squads, which games they're playing etc... so people might want to join up. In Bravo we certainly don't limit ourselves to CoD.
For the most part though - "if it ain't broke..." (The Rascal, 2009). :gr8

This is pretty much one of the best forums ive seen, perhaps maybe reducing the amount of forums would be good though as it would reduce loading time on mobile devices as well as being nicer to the eye.
Other than that its pretty much alright - like The Wooz has said we are missing a big official league that everyone can play in, this should come with MW2?
Maybe a flashy sorta news highlights section that displays on the front end for strictly squad related news, or individual things like elimination champions...Stuff could show like "Victor wins the league for the third time", and make them clickable links to the relevent forum threads.

2 small problems I encounter.
1) If I edit a post of mine and save it, I am then unable to click in the message box at the bottom of the page (to add a new post). Therfore I have to refresh the page before I can enter the message box.
2) When viewing the forum on the PS3 only the 'Ocean Blue' skin shows all the quick buttons at the top of the page. All other skins hide some of the buttons, in particular the 'New Posts' button, which is the most important button I find.
I can live we these tho :)
A general final point. I find trying to find certain threads can be hard. The search does work well, but often threads aren't where I'd expect them to be. Maybe changing the Bedroom, Bathroom, Lounge room names to Hardware, Software, General, etc etc (these are just examples) would help clarify and simplify??
top work tho as always :gr8

Really like the site!! friendly and easy to use! The only thing I could suggest would be a quick search bar at the top of the forum, I know there is a full search function tab as I used it and found what I needed more or less straight away. But that just my (lazey) little idea.

Love the place me - only down side is how untidy we users can leave the place - so finding stuff can be a bind.
Somone else has mentioned it as well, but the clans don't seem to play together as much as we used to. I hope that MW2 brings some unity back to the place as well.
Also, if there could be a button we could push to get our slippers delivered, accompanied bnice milky cuppa as well, then that would be ace...;)

Yep. What BeeCee77 said. There seems to be various tournies that die a death early on, I'd also like to see clearer results, tables etc. It does seem very COD orientated but that suits me. Although......
Really liked the poker night (obviously due to the result) maybe we could have current LMZF champions for other games, PES, GRID etc, having a little trophy/signature next to your name might encourage more people to enter different games and improve the community feel, not isolating those that don't like COD?

i essentially agree withe the comments above. any improvements would be minor as it works very well already.
my only additional point would be the physical size given to a single post. what with the squad badge, personal avatar, status, join date, location, post count and online info it can take up quite a bit of space. sometimes even an "i agree" post can take up most of my laptop screen.
maybe we could remove the join date or concatenate these bits of info. Or have a slim squad badge to reduce the size?
but to re-iterate i'm a very happy customer. i visit every day and have no real dislikes.
RadicalFish
24th September 2009, 12:56 PM
As mentioned the site is brilliant. No question.
One small suggestion would be to encourage other game nights other than COD by:
Having a couple of volunteers per game as "Game Night Organisers" for that game. Not for every game as that would be impossible but the more popular ones. These people become mods of that forum section for that game. It is their responsibility to decide on a day of the week which will be {insert game} Night and post the event each week in the events forum and in the calendar. It doesn't have to be exclusive, other games can be on the same night, etc.
To an extent this already happens - i.e. Friday night is seen as SOCOM MoB night. But it would be better to be seen as being more official and posted each week a) for newer members and b) (and more importantly) for visitors of the site to see what is going on. I have mentioned LMZF to several people who have checked it out and got back to me saying the place is too COD oriented. To me this is because this is all that gets posted on the forum even though other gamers are played.
Just a thought.

Boomer, go to your User CP and in the 'Edit Options/view display options' you can choose to switch off avatars and signatures. That cuts the space down a bit.

when I look at the site on my ps3, It doesn't show the new posts section, which is a shame cos it's how I keep upto date but apart from that it's a bloody top site:love
The ps3 browser is a bugger and sets its own rules unlike universal PC based browsers that use them same coding rules. For some reason, that only Sony know about, the browsers randomly ignores some coding tags and makings its own mind up. So the navbar, that does technically fit perfectly, the ps3 browers thinks it doesnt and randomly hides certain elements.
Have you tried to look on Facebook using the ps3 browser, thats a mess.
As for the site, all i would say is the general housekeeping on the hosting. Noticed alot or redundant files and data on there that wasnt being used, but cos i don't know whats wanted and whats not, i obviously didn't remove anything. It might help the site run a bit faster and easier, or it could just bugger it up deleting a key file or something, so its wise to think first.

Love the site, am usually on here every day reading if not always posting, cant complain about anything
Do agree that there should be more non CoD4 tournies running but this site was primarily set up as a meeting place for CoD junkies back in the day so no surprise that its still the daddy in most ppl's hearts and also its really up to us members to put ourselves out to arrange stuff if its tournies on other games thats wanted, look at Pete (BB) and his QoS nights for an example of what can be arranged with a delicate blend of enthusiasm and madness :D
Top stuff all, just keep building and they will come :gr8

Probably worth pointing out that if anyone wants to set up a dedicated night / tournament / etc on a specific game then it's more than welcome!
There have been plenty which have done really well - Grid, R6V2, GRAW, QoS and plenty more I can't remember.
If anyone does want to set one up and wants a hand doing so then feel free to PM me or one of the other Mods and we're happy to help get things set up, or take a look at what has worked in the past and try to repeat the same success.
There will always be some things that don't quite get off the mark but there are a few things we can do to avoid this where possible.
I've heard something about some "Call of Duty" game coming out, think it's in November. We could have a couple of games on that if anyone's keen...

Mark, your are the person who pointed me towards LMZF sometime ago now and i have seen it go through many challenges..I really don't think you need to do much to this site. Its very active for the amount of members registered.
The squads work ok but more could be done getting LMZF involved in leagues and matches off the site..If you want to grow the site that direction. The squads could come together to put LMZF teams out and whack a few other sites..lol

Wow serious stuff!!!! I have only been in it a few months, met loads of new friends, never been into forums/chat before still learning the ropes. New posts work well, but I do have a few problems replying on the subscribed threads. One minute it is there and the next minute it is not, I have to go back, log off and come back in again it is very confusing.
Maybe have a hard core section, maybe have a fun section for the squad tournaments because some take it a bit more serious than others.
Cannnot think of anything else at the minute will let you know.

A couple of suggestions though
the .co.uk site just doesn't work correctly, I had many problems tabs at the top (they just logged me out when I clicked on them).
New members, I didn't know anything about the squads so wondered what was going on when I was asked to join one. Could we make this a little clearer up front.
Appart from that as I said I think this place is great

Important match results (ie; league, not friendlies) and announcements along the lines of "Tiger Woods 10 tournament 9pm tonight" could be a good thing in terms of keeping everyone up to date and driving more members to new events.

Right, had a bit of time to think about this as you obviously want feedback as opposed to a pat on the back so here goes..........
Overall the forums are great if a bit confusing TBH and even more so for a new visitor. I would like to see a proper HTML website front end with graphics, information, links, vids, whatever on it and a link to the forums from there. At the minute if you type in www.lmzf.com you go straight to the forum index not the homepage. Likewise the LMZF logo has this link so takes you to the forums. For a new visitor this doesn't really tell you anything about LMZF unless you dig deeper into the threads. If you do notice the home page link at the top you are taken to a bit of a mess to be totally honest. There are various boxes on this page and they for the most part are irrelevant, not needed or not working (chat box). Again if you are a new visitor checking out the site you are still clueless as to what this place is about. When you venture into the forums there are some sections/catagories that again don't seem relevant or are too specialised – The Nursery for one. Only about 8 threads in there all to do with babies. Not quite sure how that fits in with a gaming community? I think alot of these sections could just be under a general chat heading. Sometimes when I go to create a new thread I don't know where to put it – some sections are really specific and others are really vague*. For example I want to start a thread about the new PS3 slim – where does it go? There's a mobile phone area but not a PS3 area?
*Looking at the board index today it appears that some sections have changed, merged or disappeared totally – I'm sure there was loads more yesterday but they are still not easy to navigate.
On to the bigger problem – squads/community/games. This is a tough one as LMZF was set up for squad based action on COD4. As such we became a community. Now that there are a lot of new games coming out that people want to play the existing squad structure can not and will not work. The only way it would is if everybody in a squad bought the same games which isn't going to happen. If we want to be diverse with ladders/comps/tournies in lots of games then we either need hundreds more members and massive squads to accommodate with co-leaders set up for different games or scrap the squads altogether – have a ladder based site and people make up teams/join teams for what games they want to. This would be a huge step tho and eventually would probably be the demise of LMZF as we know it. Consolegaming.eu anyone? If you know that site you will know what I'm talking about.
Personally I like the current squad structure with just one game being played for that season and it should be COD in whatever guise it currently is at. Other games/tournies can be set up to run alongside for fun but you need that focus of one league that all squads play in for an eventual title/prize. If a certain game doesn't have enough players to create matches within LMZF then appoint a team and challenge other clans like the crap clan, O&R, etc etc and fight under the banner of LMZF. This of course needs someone to take control although I think there are enough admin and mods on this site to do it with ease – appoint specific jobs to people and they can be responsible for setting up games, managing the teams etc. There should be a list of who is responsible for what and where. i.e I want to play burnout against other clans so I go to the burnout section and see that joe bloggs is the game co-ordinator and the person to contact to get on the team and play. If Mr Bloggs starts to neglect his duties he gets stripped of his position by senior admin and a new games co-ordinator appointed. Contacting a 'mod' to set up a game is not specific enough - they each need their own areas/responsibilities.
Hope this all makes sense as I can think quicker than I can type so might have missed a few bits lol. Neither of these are major gripes but possible starting points for discussion and improvement. Would be nice to see this place back to how it was over a year ago but with a structured way forward :gr8 :D

The only point I'd raise (although I think I'm echoing comments made by others) is that game events/tournaments are spread all over the place - therefore more control and straightjacketing over where things are posted would be a big improvement in terms of knowing where to look/post for stuff. Also the designations of "kitchen" and "dining room" etc don't seem relevant or useful any longer given the size and diversity of issues that our community covers - a clearer set of headings could work better.
I'm an IT simpleton, so for me everything else works fine and works well. I'd also say that the admin/mods are great at taking feedback and changing things which is good so if any ideas do appear they normally get implemented. All great as far as I'm concerned.

I love the site. the only thing is squad matches. because there are so many games that could house a squad match system, it is quite disjointed. i am in Charlie squad and we have banter, but we do not play loads of different games together. not sure it is possible to have squads for every different games, but i am sure there must be people who want to club together to play certain games.
I do see links saying who has this game or that, if so add me and to play, but of course you cannot add everyone.
Is there anyway of having someone who can head each game that can organise games etc. it may be too much i know but just trying to think of better ways of cordinating it :)

Only way i can think of polishing it off would be these for consideration as like everyone says it's pretty spot on the way it is
The kitchen, TV & Movies merged
Archiving everything in one place was spot on
Collapse button nice touch
Ideas from all for the best header
The cupboard, renamed the garden (for sport)
Family room, merging certain sub forums into a general everything else chat
Maybe give each room a different colour, makes the dining room stick out for new members maybe
Possibly lose Sony home in the games room & merge with general game into new general ps3 discussion.
Be a nice touch if each game sub forum had a small cover for it, ie..
http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee16/bed_bugz/Cod4.jpg Cod4
http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee16/bed_bugz/Burnout.jpg Burnout
Lose the competitions & ladders & redesign totally for a new controlled game based system which is integral for our continuity & activity
Possibly a new community room for all the other members only new or old to feel part of LMZF without feeling overwhelmed initially or squads arent their thing. Gotta be 70+ of them ?

The chatbox refresh is annoying in the ps3 browser. keeps shifting the page back to the top.
Solution: collapse the chat box with the arrow on the right (but i guess thats not the point) and all is ok
...........
if i've read the OP correctly, i should wait for other threads to appear before commenting on other issues should i? (ie: stuff other than the look and functionality of the forum) nothing like crytic messages:rofl
PS: I'm confused about "LMZF has reached a point in time", is there something else we should be aware of?:D that you need comments on??:P

I love this place and am on usualy every day, no gripes at all for the boards, for the members I think everybody should be in a squad, either join one or make one for non squad members, so by default you are in say...Hotel Squad, that way you get a squad room and squad games etc then if you like the idea you move out into the competitive squad world,

mmmmmmm... not sure i agree with this point. Foxtrot has evolved toi be a squad with different members playing different games. We would have liked a COD4 league, a Socom league, and a Grid league. We have tried to accomodate all games.
I think squads as they are should stay. We are a mini community here, where in a huge group you can find people who are 'on your wavelength' so to speak. This was the point of starting our squad.
We could do with more squads being set up. However this is a different topic so peeps don't quote the above.

I came across this before which may interest the sport enthusiasts as a drop down option in the sports room.
It's a widget box updated regulary with live sky sports feed, works seemless, would need a disable function though for peeps on personal devices?

i agree with scrapping the comps section on the header board thing as it never gets used as far as i know and its just too much like hard work for the lazy barstewards amongst us and also the tourny thats under the squad forum or at least merge it.
if there is a tourny or comp it usually gets put in the squad section and not the tourny section. look at the go large tourny, its a tournament but its in the squad forum and not the tourny forum .. either a merge or a removal of tourny central will solve it.
Regarding squad structure and season 4,
its just got to be mw2 there is no other and we all know it FACT. it works and it works well aswell as easy as pie to organise , ok not everyone in the squads is going to be happy and you never going to please everyone..
but at the end of the day its the core of what we are,
if there are people in squads that dont want mw2 instead of bitching and whinging maybe they should consider leaving said squad and let someone in who wants to play..

sorry m8 i was just following on from some of the above comments.
although i do think tourny central should be merged with the squad area,
regarding the xbox and wii could they not have there own place on the front page rather than just having them as sub forums under other consoles. i think this would help to make those sections easier to see from the off..

Yeah, I know and appreciate that Potts :) What I meant was could we not involve the 360 more with squad games etc. At the moment it's only PS3 stuff that gets promoted. There's quite a few 360 owners on here and if we could have 360 tournies/matches running along side PS3, it'd be sweet.

Andy, I used to do it back on league 1 and 2 but cant remember the method (auld age you understand) :)
The easiest and quickest way to do it is to save as a webpage and host the page using a fileshare site or your own space if you have some ;) If any probs lemme know and I can host them for yah and look into setting up a 2nd level url so you can ftp the site direct with your own pwd ;)

We need a new flashy header to the forum. Top of page looks plain.
Links to user groups need to be in a place you can easily find them, or if it already is, highlighted. The "who has xxx" game ones wouod be usefull for new members to add friends they know will join then online, and that may help persuade then to join squads.
Additionally the MoB, CoRE(shhh) and LTL threads need to be moved to a more general position from their current locations within the cod 4 forum as they apply to all games now.

Sorry, but just been thinking about the idea of having the squad badges at the top of the screen a bit more.
You could have it so that when you click on a squad badge it takes you to your squad room IF you are a member of that squad (obviously), if not, then it takes you to page that shows the following info;
Squad Leader(s): (have all leaders and 2IC listed with their names 'clickable' so that they can be instantly PMed)
Squad Members:
Currently playing: (games that squad members are favouring at the mo)
Currently involved in the following tournaments: (season 3, Cod 4v4, etc)
Currently Recruiting: Yes or No (delete as appropriate)
This would serve a few purposes.
1) It would help new members who are interesting in joining a squad check out all the squads at a glance. They would know who is and who isn't recruting. It would also help them make a more informed choice based on knowing which squads play certain games (i.e. Killzone, Socom, Burnout etc), which would hopefully lead to a better squad experience.
2) It would make organising matches between squads easier. Just click on the squad you want to play, click on one of the leaders names and PM them instantly.
3) I think having all the squad badges at the top of the page would be attractive and could entice more people to take the plunge and join a squad.

After typing a long reply and then pulling the plug on the laptop, I'm going to go for a shorter version this time round. I love this place and have made good friends with people on here. But standing still doesn't work so;
A front page, I think this place really needs a front page and not an index page to the forum, this could hold Blogs, RSS feeds, Twitter, Facebook link ins, videos and community driven content.
Which leads me onto the next part, we have a large community here, so why not take advantage of it and get some user content on here, I feel that it will make this a better place, although letting Pedds1 post any of his home made documentaries might not be the best idea...
